THE TEENS

Hormonal changes can dramatically impact teenage skin. Acne and regular breakouts can become common. This is the time to establish good skincare practices. Teens tend to have normal to oily skin. Washing the face with harsh strong products  should be avoided and any acne treatments should be applied directly onto blemishes (not the surrounding area). Using too harsh or drying products will over dry the surface of the skin. The skin reacts by causing the oil glands to over produce (creating an even more oily surface) and can result in blackheads and breakouts. A mild soap should be used morning and night followed by and a light moisturizer should be used every day. A good diet and plenty of rest are important because the skin tends to show everything. Also be aware that products that cause a very dry, tight feeling or blotchiness, should be discontinued.  TOP

The 20's

By the twenties teen-age hormones should be slowing down, but the occasional flare-up can still occur. Also, this is often a time of great change and stress can be a major factor in skin problems. A good skincare program is essential. Realistically, this is the time when most people begin a skin care program and become more aware of the benefits of long term care. Developing a good set of habits during the twenties will delay signs of aging later on. Skin can range from oily to dry. Oily skin types may also continue to have occasional breakouts. Frequent breakouts in the mid to late 20's may require special attention. TOP

The 30's

Both men and women are beginning to settle down in their thirties. Lifestyle changes are less dramatic, but stress can still be a critical issue. This is the time when signs of aging are just beginning to show. Generally in the mid-thirties fine expression lines begin to appear around the eyes, the mouth and on the forehead. Your regular skincare program may have to be adjusted as skin becomes less elastic and slightly drier. Oily skin is still be quite common, but if oily skin is showing signs of aging (fine lines, etc.) generally the skin is dehydrated and products need to be adjusted. Although occasional breakouts are not uncommon, frequent breakouts should be considered a problem. Normal to dry skin types should also add a night cream to their routine, especially if the weather is particularly variable or harsh. Also, if you were over-exposed to the sun during your teens or twenties, signs of sun damage can start to show by the late thirties.  TOP

The 40's

Expression lines become more noticeable, lines around mouth and forehead become apparent and loss of elasticity becomes noticeable, especially around the eyes. Also, the texture of the neck may start to become crepy. Your skincare program may need to be adjusted slightly during this period. Generally the skin is slightly more dry than in the thirties. If you had oily skin in your twenties, you may still be normal to oily (more combination) and may need to adjust your products slightly.Normal to dry and dry skin types should definitely be using a night creme by now and all skin types should be using an eye creme.   TOP

The 50's

By the fifties skin tends to range from normal/combination to dry. Generally oily skin is gone (normal to oily may still occur). Fine lines, especially around the eyes may be noticeable and indentations from the nose to the mouth and on the forehead also become apparent. In addition, crows feet maybe appearing as well as crepy eyelids and throat. A wrinkle removimg cream should be used to fade these lines. If you have taken good care of your skin, these signs should be less obvious, however changes in lifestyle, medications and the body's biological changes can also cause dramatic changes in the skin during this period. Skin can definitely be considered maturing and should be treated with special care.  TOP

The 60's Plus

Normal and normal to dry skin are most common now and often age spots are becoming very obvious. Texture is not as good as it was. This is the time when both heredity and the care you have taken of your skin (or the neglect) definitely show up. If you have taken reasonable care of yourskin, avoided the sun (and other damaging factors) and are healthy, the signs of aging should be extremely minor for both men and women until mid to late 60's. People who had oily skin when younger should notice fewer lines and wrinkles than those with dry skin (unless a good skin care routine has been maintained).    TOP
